You've got two weeks behind you & only 14 weeks left until the end of the semester! Football kicks off Saturday, and it’s a three day weekend as many of us celebrate Labor Day. But there are many in Texas & Louisiana that won’t be celebrating, watching football, grilling out, or taking a break. Hurricane Harvey has caused an estimated $190 billion in devastation. Early estimates say that the people of east Texas & west Louisiana affected by Harvey are equivalent to the student enrollment of UF & SFC. So how can you help?
Pray & stay informed of how you can pray. You can check for regular updates with the North American Mission Board’s (NAMB) Disaster Relief agency. They can tell you what is going on through our denomination’s relief agency (the 3rd largest relief agency in the US).
Give wisely toward the efforts. Giving through NAMB will ensure that every dollar given will go toward the relief of those affected & also will go toward helping the volunteers who are traveling from all over the US to help.
Consider going. There will be an organized trip in December where students will have the opportunity to head to TX/LA to help with efforts after the semester is wrapped up.
Last September I experienced the effects of a very small hurricane in Tallahassee…and we needed help. Last November, I went with 20 students to Baton Rouge to help after they had severe flooding. We’ve taken students from Gainesville to New Orleans after Katrina ravaged the Crescent City. Most of us have had friends or family members affected by what scripture calls the groaning of creation...waiting for Jesus to come & make all things right (Romans 8). So pray this weekend for Texas & Louisiana…ask God to use those changed by the Gospel and for the Gospel to take hold in Texas & Louisiana.
